Advice on prepaid credit cards in the UK please?

Q) Hi. I have a bad credit history and have only got an electron card. I don't want to get anymore credit but would like a credit card so I am able to book things and buy online.Does anyone know anything about prepaid credit cards? Are there different ones? Which are cheaper etc? Any advice would be very useful thanks.

A) Hi Benchgirl, First of let me say that there are a few misinformed individuals out there who are criticizing prepaid cards for no reason whatsoever. The simple fact is that prepaid cards are NOT for everyone but they can be absolutely godsent for some. If you have a bad credit history, do not have a bank account or do not want to have a bank account or do not want to get into debt, then prepaid is fantastic. In terms of choices, i'd list the following 1. Splash Plastic - http://www.splashplastic.com - the most stable offering, well priced and definitely one i would recommend. 2. Quidity Card - http://www.quiditycard.com - again very good but the fees are slightly higher than Splash although both splash and quidity are provided by the same firm 3. Cashplus - http://www.mycahsplus.co.uk - a good offering - more expensive than 1 and 2 above with one additional drawback - it is a mastercard product as oppossed to Maestro - so is the target of fraud more often - so if you are risk averse go for 1 or 2 4. ExtremeCred - http://www.extremecred.com - good looking card but 1,2 and 3 are definitely better. Also with extremecred, you need a debit card to apply for the card which kind of beats the purpose of having a card. Now if you really want to confuse yourself, visit 1. http://www.moneysupermarket.com/cards/credit_card.asp and select prepaid cards and quick search or visit 2. http://www.which-prepaid-card.co.uk/features/compare-cards-prepaid.html Lots of options, i'd recommend Splash or Quidity with Cahsplus a good alternative. Avoid anything provided by the firm Bluecorner (Affinity Cards) as the cards have lots of problems and the last thing you want to do is have to end up cleaning dishes in a restaurant cuz your card didnt work!!! Hope all this helps and forget all the ignorant fools who say prepay is a rip off - they dont realise what it is because they dont need prepaid!! Have fun!! Cheers Psycho_RudeBoy

can anyone advise on the cheapest return flight from Johannesburg South Africa to London Uk?

Q) We live in Zambia, have UK credit cards and have to fly from South Africa...difficult to do online bookings....

A) Depending on when you left the uk depends on whether you will be able to book with a uk travel company. Price all depends on when you are planning on travelling, as airfares are all based on seasons - peak, mid, low.... Your best bet is to try phoning different travel companies as if you want to fly jnb-lon-jnb again i doubt you will be able to book it/get a quote online with a uk agent.

I need to action a credit card chargeback, how do i go about doing it?

Q) I recently ordered a pair of sunglasses from a reputable, "porfessional" looking website in the US (i live in the UK). This site has received no negative reviews/press so I was very confident buying my glasses 50% cheaper than anywhere i could find in the UK. I received my glasses and this is when the problems started. First, they had sent me the wrong model. Pretty annoying. Then, on closer inspecition, I noticed the glasses actually looked used. This was pretty much confirmed when i noticed that the right arm had a small chip of paint missing. The front of glasses have metal detailing on the top of the lense. This metal detailing had grazing running on its upper and underside edge. I find this totally ridiculous and incredibly bizarre considering the website has received good write ups. I have emailed them with as yet no reply. If they do not reply/refund, i'm gonna need to do a chargeback. Im with Morgan Stanley & paid through PayPal. What do i say to Morgan Stanley? Thanks I dont want to action anything with PayPal - it will take too long and i simply do not have the patience to wait around on something as important as my finances. I paid on credit card (Morgan Stanley) through PayPal

A) Start with PayPal and open a dispute with them, paypal insures all transactions upto £500

US vs UK webhosting?

Q) I'm about to start creating a simple online store and am searching for cheap webhosts. The cheapest are in the US. Can anyone tell me whether it's advisable to go for an american host? Will there be problems accepting credit card payments etc?

A) First of all - two companies to avoid (based on my experience with them) Avoid 1&1 hosting at all costs. More about that at: http://www.chrisbeach.co.uk/view/tech/avoid_oneandone_internet Also, avoid Interhost UK, which I have also documented at http://www.chrisbeach.co.uk/view/tech/interhost_technical_support_on_holiday Rackspace (http://www.rackspace.com/) and ByteMark (http://www.bytemark.co.uk/) have both been recommended to me. ByteMark is the personal choice of a friend of mine Simon Willison who lectures on web development and is the chairman of the upcoming Future of Web Apps conference - definitely someone to listen to when it comes to chosing a web host!

Cheap way to send money from the UK to the US?

Q) Hey, I'm originally from the USA, but living in London right now. I owe my dad about $550 for paying off my US credit card, but I'm not sure of a good way to send that money to him. I have his account details, but everything I've found costs about £30 or more in charges! Are there any cheaper options? Is it safe to send a banker's draft through the mail, and if the draft is in pounds will my dad be able to deposit it into his US bank account? Help me, YahooAnswerers!

A) i had the same problem when i was living in london, if you have a UK bank account your back can draw up a foreign bank draft and it costs about half of your other option

Cheap Flights?

Q) I live and work in China and fly back to the UK once a year, the cheapest flights are on the net, however I do not have a credit card and so I can not take advantage of these offers, any ideas

A) Open up a checking account with a bank that has a visa or mastercard debit card. Those debit cards can be used, like a credit card, except that the money is removed directly from you checking account.

Q) and you don't have to complete any offers like credit cards and other offers that don't involve shipping prices or a website where ps3s are in good condition but are discounted a lot or other consoles or devices-this is in the u.s.a, cause all of the sites i go to look to be so cheap like a ps3 for 300 $ but it ends up being 300 euros and only ships within the uk

A) NO where. The only sites that say that are scams trying to rip you off. Don't be an idiot, nothing in the world is free but air.

UK Is the boom about to bust?

Q) The boom has been based on cheap debt, house inflation and low wages. With the credit crunch, sub prime mortgages rising to 11%. Is Gorden's house of cards about to tumble? One mans bust is another mans boom. I glad of your concern, but either way it wont affect me. 'scroog. yah bet yah! Amsterdam. Yes the economy is cyclical, but when? is it now? That the question. I know no one knows. Even macroeconomic are influenced by events way outside the control of the chancellor, it may turn his hair white if not his eyebrows! But Brown has always took credit for the economy. But it was on the upturn under Fat Ken. I think it as little to do with number11. But they could be a big fall, with the amount of debt in this land, it will hurt. There has been some big changes. Russia from a basket case to a petro-state. Brazil we don't hear about as much(BBC dosen't do SA) When I was there in 95 it was like a Eastern Block contry, but it had a large manufactoring base together with agrocultra and resorses. I don't think it will be long when the well educated Indians, will be doing the work for UK companys. Why pay high cost for work which dosen't need to be based anywhere. If you can work from home! That home can be Bangorlor!

A) Yes, because ever since the dawn of time, economies have risen and fallen. Nothing to do with Gordon (or Nigel or Alistair for that matter) the undulating nature of economies is bigger than any single Chancellor or Finance Minister. But don't forget the BRIC countries. Brazil, Russia, India and China are all still booming away - this is their equivalent to our Industrial Revolution - their societies are being transformed. Just because the US and part of Europe is experiencing a downturn, doesn't mean that the rest of the world is.
