Work of Art?

Q) To be labelled a "work of Art", a painting, sculpture or other art form should display certain qualities that are unique. However, over the past century there has been a decline in the quality of prize-winning artwork and it is now possible for quite ordinary pieces of art to be labelled "masterpieces" whilst true works of art pass unnoticed. Do you agree or disagree? Give me you reasons. Thanks.

A) The definition of "Masterpiece" has evolved along with the rest of world culture over the past century. Just look at the changes in popular music since the late 1800's and you'll see the comparison. Inspired art comes in many different forms, and always has. It's only recently that "non-mainsteam" art forms are recognized as valid representations of modern culture. And that's what art is - a representation of the current culture. Our understanding of the arts has now extended into categories like abstract art, interpretive dance, and experimental jazz, to name a few. That means we have become more flexible in recognizing the unmutable principles of art that exist in non-mainstream art forms. Not everyone will find validation in every work of art. Some of the established "masterpieces" from centuries past leave me cold. And there are some splendid abstract pieces that have won recent acclaim, and that is a long-awaited milestone for art. I don't think it's all bad - 100 years from now there will be a distinct record of the changes this century wrought, identified in the arts we chose to describe it. In the end, from an anthropologist's point of view, we ARE what we leave behind.

A) I totally agree! I mean if a so called artist can present her unmade dirty bed as a piece of artwork, what is the art world coming to? What happened to nice works of art, not necessarily aesthetic pieces, but pieces that actually mean something, I'm not an art lover as such, but I do know what I like and I certainly don't like some of this 'modern art' rubbish!

Getting my art work posted in a Gallery....?

Q) Hi, i asked a similer question, but i though i would make it more, abroad. I am an artistic photographer and i want to get my artwork hung in a gallery or museum for modern art, like the MOMA In NYC. People love my shots and think that they are beautiful and should be in a gallery, so i asked myself, why aren't they. Does anyone own an art gallery or know how to get my art work into an art gallery? Any contacts or ideas, other than stapling it to the walls and leaving would be apprecited. Thanks so much.

A) Well, MOMA is kind of an ambitious place to start. There are lots of small galleries looking for artists. You need to get your work together in a portfolio and start making contacts. There are probably a lot of gallery spaces in your area. Public libraries, art schools or cooperatives, even cafes and restaurants display art.

A) Why is this in psychology? Because art can make people think, react and also do the head in. Is something you've created not getting the attention you think it deserves? Pass unnoticed? What constitutes a "true" work of art? However much time, thought and effort a person puts into creating a thing there is no specific formula that can guarantee appreciation and/or understanding from an audience (even of 1.) Make it because you want to. Enjoy it because you do.

A) The idea that one piece of art is a master piece derives its meaning from who ever judges that work as important. The main friction in the art world i think occur between what is consider classical art and what is contemporary art. Both however influence the other as there is very little art though out history that hasn't had some cultural influence placed out in it's construction. I consider that art whether or not a masterpiece has to has emotional response from the viewer. This idea has be exploited by the (shock) artist those artist that choose the subject that has controversy connected to the subject. Popular art as such is not necessarily fine art or well executed art. The work of Andy Warhol is a form of fine art and popular but his subject and execution in my opinion is very consumer based. I consider that the bravest artist in fine arts was Goya as he used all the tradition but wasn't captive to the sponsors and benefactors of his society..

Ideas for art work in apartment [mural/collage] ?

Q) I am moving into an apartment where I can't paint the walls. I was thinking of covering a section/1 wall of my bedroom with either brown paper [like the grocery bag material], bulletin board paper or just pieces of poster board. I have been trying to think of or find ideas of some kind of art work to do. Something more along the lines of abstract art, but nothing really complicated, just a splash of fun. If you know of any ideas or websites which have neat looking ideas/art works please share! Thanks! :]

A) check with your landlord first. "painting" the walls and covering the walls with paper or board are two very different things i'd go abstract with it. figure out what colors you want in the room and go for it. detailed murals are a lot more time-consuming than you'd think

A) You can also use liquid starch to adhere fabric to the walls and remove it without a trace when you leave, to create art. You can make a collage of different fabric using inexpensive quilting squares or discount fabric that matches your decor. Simply soak the fabric in the liquid starch, use a credit card to smooth it on the wall and let it dry. You cannot use very heavy fabrics though.
